๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ’ป Would you get a root canal to not go into the office?

Workers hate the idea of going to the office so much 26% say they'd rather get a root canal. Are you one of them?

Hey, remote work fam! This is Remote Insider your favorite spot to get up to speed on what's going in the world of remote work and digital nomadism. In this email we talk about...

  • remote work is making restaurant chains rethink their business model

  • Boundless Life expands to Tuscany

  • employees would rather get a root canal then go back to the office

Before we jump into that, let's talk about something we've all been worried about as remote workers at one time or another... will you be overlooked for promotions because you're remote?

๐Ÿ’ก Tips & Tricks

How to get noticed and promoted when working remotely:

Recent studies suggest that while remote workers tend to be more productive than their in-office compatriots, they receive promotions at a lower rate than them. With that in mind, here are 4 tips from career coach Al Dea to score that promotion even if you've never been to the office:

  1. Show your work - make a habit of regularly sharing what you're working on inside the company and set up check-in meetings with your boss or manager to go over your work.

  2. Build relationships - a report by Harvard Business Review found that people who build relationships with senior members of the company are 82% more likely to get a promotion. Be proactive about setting meetings with your boss or manager and don't shy away from networking. It's part of the game!

  3. Document your wins - when something good happens, write it down or share it with your team and higher-ups. Bonus points if you do it online on LinkedIn!

  4. Build a personal brand - start writing on LinkedIn or an online publication about your area of expertise. This will naturally make you seem like an authority and will keep you top of mind with decision makers in your company. Who knows, it could also help you get a higher paying job!

๐Ÿฅ— Remote work puts pressure on chains like Sweetgreen

Sweetgreen's stock has dropped 60% over the last years thanks to a perfect storm of inflation and layoffs, but perhaps the biggest cause is remote work.

The company's business model, and the model of other similar lunch restaurant chains, is heavily reliant on office workers grabbing lunch at their physical location. Despite recent news of companies pulling employees back to the office, the commercial real estate giant CBRE has said that the role of the office is changing permanently. This will have downstream effects on the businesses that rely on office workers.

As a result, Sweetgreen is investing in prioritizing online orders (which accounted for 60% of orders in Q3 of 2022) and is developing a subscription service. Sweetgreen may have the brand loyalty and cash to adapt, but only time will tell if other brands and mom-and-pop businesses that find themselves in the same position will be able to do the same.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ Digital nomad community for families Boundless Life expands to Tuscany

Boundless Life is focused on helping parents who work remotely the chance to travel the world with their kids, without sacrificing their educations and social opportunities. This month, the community unveiled its new education hub in Pistoia, Tuscany, its third location in Europe.

The micro-school will welcome 60 kids between the ages of 1 - 12 and will offer its signature education solutions based on the Finnish curriculum and the Nordic Baccalaureate.

While kids are receiving the best education possible to prepare them for an ever quicker changing world, parents can relax and know that their workspace and apartments will be figured out by the Boundless Life staff truly making this a win-win for all members of the family.

๐Ÿฆท 26% of workers would rather get a root canal than go back to the office

As part of its new Work Watch Report, job site Monster surveyed 1,806 US workers in September 2022 and found that more than 1 in 4 would rather get a root canal than come back into the office 5 days a week.

And while root canals are notoriously painful, when you think about the long-term benefits of remote work, it makes sense. Research shows that remote workers report having much higher overall well-being and save an average of $5,679 per year they would have otherwise spent on commuting costs.

What do you think? If you were given the option between working only in the office or get a root canal, which would you choose?
