But first, while this time of year means the start of Spring, it also means taxes. If you’re procrastinating getting started (like every other normal human) we have a few easy tips to get you started…

💸 3 Tips for Filing Taxes as a Digital Nomad

It’s that time of the year again, we gotta pay the tax man. If you’ve been living as a digital nomad for the last year and wondering how that impacts your taxes, here are a few quick tips to get you started:

1. Know your tax responsibilities:

The most important thing to know is who you’re responsible to pay taxes to. This will most likely depend on your citizenship(s) and how long you spent in certain locations.

If you’re from the US you have to pay taxes there even if you didn’t spend the majority of 2022 there since US taxes are based on citizenship, however, they may be some exclusions depending on how long you were out of the country. Consider speaking with a professional tax advisor if you’re not sure of what to do. We personally use and recommend Online Taxman.

2. Know your deductions:

Most often your deductions will be based on your employment status (self-employed vs employee) or how long you spent inside of a country.

For example, in the US if you spent 330 days outside of the US you don’t have to pay taxes on the first $112,000 you earn.

If you have residency or citizenship in another country this is also something that may help you deduct your taxes, but it will also make filing taxes correctly more difficult so in this situation, we highly recommend working with a professional service.

3. Keep track of everything:

While it may be too late for it this year, make sure you keep track of all your transactions, especially if they can be considered business expenses since they help lower your tax bill.

One easy way of doing this is going over your monthly statements and copying important transactions onto a spreadsheet for next year’s tax season. Budget tracking apps like Mint can also be useful for this.

Good luck 🍀

🐣 The Surprising Effect of Remote Work: Improved Fertility Rates

Miguel Pereira / Getty

Over the last 50 years Americans have had fewer and fewer babies, in fact, in 2020 the US reported its lowest fertility rate on record.

But then last year something weird happened… there was an increase!

When researchers looked closer and surveyed over 3000 women, they found that remote work was a likely cause. Their research found that female remote workers were more likely to intend to have a baby than their in-office compatriots.

Remote work may aid family formation by removing the need to choose between career and a family, and it reduces commute times and the saved hours can be put towards family time.

In fact, remote work had an even larger effect on older women who already had children. The authors of the study found that “remote work doesn’t necessarily trigger women to initiate childbearing,” but it might help older mothers “balance the competing demands of work and family.”

While this research is still new and used a relatively small sample size it nonetheless shows how remote work could help improve dropping fertility rates.

oops… that’s not the right screen.

Where’s that exit button!?

🎒 Our Favorite Tech Pouch & Probably Soon To Be Yours As Well

As remote workers, we all need a place to stash all those dongles and cables, but not all tech pouches are created equal.

The 2L Evergoods Civic Access Pouch or CAP2 for short is one of our absolute favorites. At 2 liters it has enough space to keep all your daily essentials and then some but what shoots it to the top of the list for us is the way the top opens up creating a drawer-like setup that presents everything inside for easy access.
