🎒 DIGITAL NOMADS

The workers quitting digital nomadism

According to numerous recent studies, the number of digital nomads is increasing at a rapid pace. However, more and more seasoned digital nomads are actually quitting the lifestyle.

Some nomads, especially those that have been living the lifestyle before COVID, are starting to feel the weight of the negatives that may not be advertised in people’s highlight reels, such as the absence of a community and lack of reliable routine.

For entrepreneurial nomads, juggling travel planning, finding new accommodations, and figuring out how a new place works all while trying to launch a business can be exhausting.

This can be especially troublesome if someone has adopted digital nomadism as part of their identity. These situations can present people with a lose-lose situation - continue living a life that isn’t serving them anymore, or deal with an identity crisis.

The digital nomad lifestyle isn’t for everyone. It can be hard, lonely, and in some situations detrimental to other goals. We need to have more honest conversations around this in order to help people make the best lifestyle choices for themselves.

In your opinion, what is the hardest part about being a digital nomad?

📰 NEWS

Salesforce tells employees it will donate $10 per day to charity if they return to the office

It seems Salesforce is so desperate to get people back into the office that it’s bribing employees with donations.

Last week, the software sales juggernaut announced the launch of its “Connect for Good” program. The deal is that Salesforce will donate $10 per day that employees work out of the office.

To do this, Salesforce will track badge swipes on a monthly basis and donate the money based on an internal voting system that allows employees to vote on what charity will receive the money.

This is a shady tactic since it directly pulls at the guilt strings of employees. Even after laying off 10% of its workforce in Q1, Salesforce still has over 70,000 employees. At $10 per day per employee, that’s a lot of potential money flowing into charities

🔮 FUTURE OF WORK

Portugal launches a government-funded 4-day workweek trial

Portugal is the newest country to launch a 4-day workweek experiment.

The program is being run by 4 Day Week Global, the same organization that facilitated the popular 4-day workweek trial in the UK. Over the next 6 months, 39 businesses in Portugal will agree to reduce worker hours without cutting their pay.

It’s based on the 100-80-100 model in which workers receive 100% of the pay for working 80% of the time in exchange for delivering 100% of their usual output.

The thesis behind the 4-day workweek is that by reducing workers’ hours companies can lower stress and overwhelm, and provide workers with more rest time which will boost productivity on workdays.

In the end, this should allow companies to still achieve the same amount of work which was found to be the case in previous trials in the US and UK.

🚨 WORD ON THE WEB

  • Dealing with divorce as a digital nomad. In the unraveling of borderless love, the division of places is more important than the division of material possessions.

  • Survey finds 42% of workers are considering quitting their jobs. Some of the top reasons include poor work-life balance and a toxic culture, while the top thing survey participants are looking for is remote work options.

  • While downtown flounders, this SF neighborhood is thriving. Outer Sunset, a San Francisco suburb, is a poster child for how cities can win in a post-pandemic world

  • David Sacks attacks remote work & gets owned in the comments. The ex-PayPal founder and cohost of All In Pod tweeted that it was time to admit that remote work doesn’t work, but people strongly disagreed.
