🧑‍💻 Gen Z is officially the Side Hustle Generation

PLUS how to live out of Airbnbs for less than your rent, digital nomad executives are on the rise, and India's new plan for a digital nomad village AND visa

Hey Insiders, happy Wednesday! Today’s email is a bit lengthier than normal but it’s a banger I PROMISE. Here’s what I have for you…

Today’s email is a 6min 43sec read:

  • 🏡 How to live out of Airbnbs for less than your rent

  • 🎒 Digital nomad executives are on the rise

  • 🇮🇳 India is building a digital nomad initiative

But first, the main event of the email! As you probably already know I’m a big fan of entrepreneurship and think it will be the future of work… and Gen Zers it seems are all aboard the side hustle train 👇

🔬 DEEP DIVE

The Hustle Generation: How Gen Z Will Change Work Forever

Get good grades in school > Go to a good college > Get a good job, so you can live a good life and eventually retire.

It’s the script to life that many of us were sold growing up, but does it actually work in today’s world?

Instead, they are embracing a much more interesting style of working - the Career Portfolio

The term Career Portfolio was first popularized in the 1990s by Charles Handy, an author and expert on organizational behavior and management.

Handy predicted that aided by technology and the internet, workers wouldn’t rely on a single job as they had in the past, but they would instead opt into working multiple gigs.

This would make workers more financially secure in an unpredictable economic environment.

While most Gen Zers have likely never heard of Charles Handy, MANY are using his playbook!

And it’s not just jobs, they’re mixing in freelancing & entrepreneurship!

A survey by Fiverr found that 67% of Gen Z are currently freelancing or plan to start freelancing, and another study by WP Engine found that 62% of Gen Z either have their own business or are thinking about starting one.

Some even have a few businesses, another survey by Microsoft found that 48% of Gen Z respondents were juggling multiple side hustles at the same time!

While a Career Portfolio allows you to experiment with ideas and make money from multiple interests, it’s even more powerful when focused in a specific direction…

Imagine having a part/full-time job as a web developer, working as a freelance web dev in the afternoons, and also selling website themes on the internet.

This is what I call the Career Portfolio Trifecta!

It gives you the “stability” of a 9-5 job, allows you to maximize your hourly rate through freelancing, and make money while you sleep through your own digital products.

And since it’s all focused on one “industry” they help fuel each other!

Young workers who embrace the Career Portfolio model are no longer at the mercy of big companies that can lay them off or change their roles at the snap of a finger. They become far more autonomous, in many ways advancing the ideas that their Millennial digital nomad predecessors started.

But what about employers? Where do they fit into this?

Well, they can either embrace this and benefit, or fight against it and lose.

Companies have a choice to make, they can choose to allow Gen Zers to have multiple side hustles and try to find ways to improve their business through it, or alienate some of the top talent of this generation.

Thanks to social media and work platforms like Upwork & Fiverr it’s never been easier to start a business, and Gen Zers aren’t being fooled by the societal script.

As Shola West, a 20-something career portfoliost says "I don't believe that to be successful I have to be a manager and then a director. I'd actually rather do a bit of this and a bit of that and find out what I'm good at and what I love.“

Watch out world, Gen Z is here and it doesn’t want your ties and cubicles!

Are you Gen Z? If so, what is your relationship to side hustles and the portfolio career?

How to Live Out Of Airbnbs For Less Than Your Rent

Airbnbs have been climbing in price for the last 5 years, but there are some easy hacks to find accommodations so cheap it puts your normal rent to shame.

Look for popular tourist locations, in the off-season, and book for a month or longer!

These locations normally have lots of availability (a surplus of supply) but very low demand in the shoulder season, and when you book for a month or longer you get a long-term discount.

Do You Think Your Public Library is "Remote Work Ready"?

On Monday we wrote about how public libraries are becoming a remote worker’s best friend and asked you to report on how your local library is responding, and the results were… promising!

🚀 J.B: “My local library has promoted all of these things since before the pandemic. I’m good with working from home but this is one tax I’m happy to pay to help others.”

🚀 B.F: “Our local library branch is about to be renovated to include even more study and meeting rooms.”

📚 C.G: “My library is a great little library -- but it is basically one large open space with tables and chairs, computers, and, of course, the stacks. There's a small used book store in it and a cute children's area; however, to do work there, one would have to be quietly sitting at a shared table.”
