🎒DIGITAL NOMADS

Work all over the world without ruining it: Ethics for digital nomads

In recent months there has been a lot of talk about whether digital nomads are actually beneficial to a location. There’s a lot you can point to on both sides of the argument but at the end of the day, the truth is that like every other social phenomenon both can be true.

It comes down to us as individuals to make an effort to leave a place better than we found it.

Here are a few easy ways to do that:

  • Avoid Airbnb

  • Volunteer with local groups

  • Learn some of the local language

  • Help upskill local communities when possible

And there are plenty of digital nomads out there that are making an effort to facilitate this and ensure that nomads are a value add to the communities they visit:

  • Lavinia Iosub, founder of Livit Coworking in Bali, runs regular workshops where nomads help locals gain access to the global market

  • Lauren Razavi, director of special projects at SafetyWing, helps governments create equitable laws to benefit nomads & locals

  • Luis Calado started Madeira Friends to facilitate volunteering opportunities for digital nomads in Madeira, Portugal

As digital nomads it’s up to us to make sure that we are a positive addition to the communities we visit and doing so doesn’t have to be hard or take up a bunch of time.

💡 TIPS & TRICKS

Here’s why you should work from the floor today

A new trend is sweeping TikTok and it’s called “floor work” - the idea of spending a few hours a day working while sitting on the floor.

While at first it just seems like a silly way to spice up your WFH a bit, it turns out it actually has some real benefits and is promoted by doctors and chiropractors.

Sitting on the floor cross-legged while working can actually encourage proper posture, improve flexibility, and reduce some of the downsides of sitting in a chair for long periods of time.

To really do floor work right, try leaning back on a wall and using a small table to raise your laptop so you’re not bending your neck to look down at your lap.

💾 TECH

This new AI wants to be your new remote work BFF and it’s freaking me out!

Pi is a brand new AI that wants to help you fight loneliness as a remote worker… and I have to be honest after messing around with it for half an hour I’m a little freaked out!

It was developed by Inflection AI which was founded by LinkedIn founder Reid Hofmann and Deepmind’s Mustafa Suleyman and its self-described goal is “to be useful, friendly, and fun”.

What I found really freaky about Pi is just how human it felt. It understood general banter, threw in words like “lol” and “haha” when I said something funny, and called my experience going to the mall with my dad “wholesome”.

I don’t think that Pi is the right solution for remote work loneliness, but if someone told me it helped them scratch that itch from to time, I definitely wouldn’t be shocked.

Give Pi a go and let me know what you think!

Is Pi freaking you out?

🚨 WORD ON THE WEB

  • Meta will require staff to be in the office at least 3 days a week. In a recent statement, the Facebook parent company announced that “office-assigned” employees will have RTO for at least 3 days while fully remote employees can stay that way.

  • Mayor Adams reverses stance on remote work & announces flexible work pilot for NYC. Originally a staunch anti-remote work advocate, NYC mayor Eric Adams just launched a pilot that will allow city workers to WFH 2 days and explore how to bring more flexibility to city workers long term.

  • Amazon workers walk out over lack of trust in leadership & RTO demands. Over 2000 Amazon employees gathered in front of the company’s headquarters demanding more climate action, greater transparency, and an end to RTO demands.
