🧑‍💻 Canada announces digital nomad visa

PLUS the workplace pendulum, learning about the future of work from a bank, career crisis advice, and new EU law for remote workers

Hey Insider, I hope it’s been an epic week! I’m prepping to head back to Mexico (and possibly fly through a hurricane 😨) on Sunday. I must admit, being back in the US has been great, but there are other North American countries making big moves in the nomad space!

Today’s email is a 4min 19sec read:

  • 🇨🇦 Canada’s new digital nomad visa actually sounds good

  • 💫 The workplace pendulum

  • 🏦 A peak at the future of work from a bank!?

Let’s dive in…

🎒 DIGITAL NOMADS

Canada is launching a new digital nomad visa. Here’s everything you need to know!

To date over 50 countries have launched some type of digital nomad visa and the newest addition to that list may soon be Canada.

This week the Canadian government announced that they are working on a visa scheme targeting remote workers. They see it as a way to attract high skilled workers to Great White North as a way to combat their ongoing talent shortage

While nothing is official yet, what we do know so far actually looks pretty good:

  • visa will allow you to stay in Canada for up to 6 months

  • ability to extend if you end up working with a Canadian company

  • no salary threshold (!!!)

The Canadian government is still working with leaders from the private sector to determine if there is any way they can continue to sweeten the offer.

Supposedly, there will also be a visa program specifically aimed at US talent, but no word yet on what that will feature outside of the regular nomad visa.

One thing I’m certainly keeping an eye on is the no salary threshold, I wouldn’t be surprised if some type of threshold is put in place. If they do not add one, it would immediately make this one of the most flexible nomad visas out there.

The good news is that if you’ve always dreamed of exploring the great outdoors of Canada, you may soon have plenty of time to do it!

🔮 FUTURE OF WORK

The workplace pendulum swings toward flexibility and choice

When COVID reared its ugly head in 2020 the pendulum of work swing HARD in the direction of remote work.

There really was no other option!

But now that COVID is comfortably 🤞 in our rearview mirrors, the pendulum has started to swing back as companies pull workers back to the office

However, the pendulum will likely settle somewhere in the middle providing workers with flexibility and choice while retaining some of the perks of in-office work.

62% of workers report they will quit their current job if their workplace did not offer any flexibility.

So we’re definitely not going back to pre-2020 offices!

The answer likely lies in some form of “hybrid” work but many companies still have A LONG way to go in improving their culture and establishing the digital-first operations needed to make hybrid work actually work.

This change will take time, but make no mistake, it’s coming.

💻 REMOTE WORK

Mastercard is a shining example of flexible work done right

Following up on the pendulum swing of flexibility, Mastercard is a perfect example of a company embracing a flexibility-first work style.

While the company has 7 headquarters around the US, it’s completely up to workers to decide how to use them. They can work fully remotely, hybrid, or come into the office every day.

Mastercard also allows workers up to 4 weeks per year during which they can work from anywhere in the world, a program they call Work From Elsewhere.

In addition, developers get regular “autonomy days” during which they’re encouraged to work on side projects related to their work.

A few results of these autonomy days include a dark mode for Mastercard’s internal backend software and a program that automatically sorts and categorizes customer support emails.

These perks may be available primarily for Mastercard developers at the moment, but it is a great example of what work could look like if more companies embrace this work style for more career types.
